hammering the floor

This is a picture of University of Vermont student Ashley Orenberg hammering a nail into the floor of a house that they were building from the ground up in Gulfport, Mississippi. Shye was part of a group of hundreds of college students from Hillels across the country that spent their winter or spring breaks in Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi, repairing homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The students learned basic construction and roofing skills. By the end of the week, the exterior of this house, which would house three generations of family members, was finished. This picture was taken by University of Vermont Hillel student Sarah Glassman in March, 2006.
