This is a photograph of students using crowbars to break down the door to a home damaged by Hurricane Katrina. New York area Hillel students were cleaning and gutting this home as part of an alternative winter break trip to New Orleans in January, 2007. This photograph was taken by trip participant and Brooklyn College student Sharona Spiewak. This group was part of Hillel’s larger alternative break program that has sent hundreds of college students and staff members from Hillels across the country to repair and rebuild damaged homes in New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
